View Full Version : Not That I Could Do It But, Swap a 6.1 In Place Of a 5.7?
bill440cars 07-06-2010, 03:03 PM I was just curious IF it would be worth the effort and what would have to be changed to accomplish it (exhaust, computer.....?). You know, like IF you found a wrecked one with the 6.1 and there was no damage to the engine or it's components AND you COULD manage to get it. I don't KNOW of any, It was just a thought. I guess I'm wondering what it would take to bring the 5.7 up to compare with the 6.1.
HonkEwitDaJeep 07-06-2010, 03:14 PM suspension, computers, and a ton of labor....would be cheaper to stroke the 5.7 and be faster than an SRT
Craftsman 07-06-2010, 03:17 PM I think you would be needing a harness and computer swap. Plus if you wanna make that kinda HP you are going to need suspension upgrades as well, just to keep you safe when your foot is into it. (Which mine would be constantly)

Who are you kidding Joe your foots always in it anyway :D
Mr Farrell 07-06-2010, 03:31 PM nyinstaller from custommagnums.com swapped from 3.5 to 6.1. others have done this swap too.
here's the thread.

bill440cars 07-06-2010, 04:02 PM Hey, I appreciate the input guys. I was just curious, IF it could be feasible to do it and also, what would get the 5.7 up to the 6.1 and I'm ALWAYS appreciative of the input here. I'm ALWAYS interested in things like that. Don't think I'd ever try it now days. I ain't as young as I used to be, when I have rebuilt engines or swapped out engines on my driveway and such as that. kinda intrigued by the "Stroking" idea though.
BTW Hawk, IF I ever DID do some High Performance Modding on MY engine, remind me to NEVER let Joe behind the wheel!:D
Had to mess with Joe a bit. lol ;)
Yeah I guess I'm kind of curious why you would want to go the swap route?
You could turn your 5.7L into a 392 stroker (~6.4L) which would probably be cheaper and easier than a swap. Or a supercharger would be even cheaper and easier than that.
What got you thinking about a swap? Find a 6.1 for sale?

No, I don't have any leads on a 6.1 or anything. My mind just gets to wondering about things like that. I've ALWAYS had that problem, being to curious about things for my own good, sometimes.

Ksmagnum 07-06-2010, 04:36 PM I've talked to nyinstaller, 5.7 to 6.1 wouldn't be all that hard, you would want to swap suspension, but the actual swap wouldn't be near as involved as a 3.5 to 6.1.
The 6.1 block can be stroked to 426 and I believe will handle more power than a 5.7. When my engine need rebuilt I want to stroke it.

It WOULD be cool to be sporting a "426 HEMI" (BUT, a 392 would be a COOL vintage size to be sporting as well) but, like you, I'd probably wait til MY engine NEEDED torn into, before I'd even consider anything of the sort. No, I'm not thinking of what I'd call "Big Time Mods" like that. I'm just one of those who says, "What If" or "I Wonder IF". BUT I HAVE gone with ideas before............. NAW, Not Yet anyway. Got too many things to take care of and too much revamping in my personal life, to be jumping into something THAT big, for now.;)
Black Magic 07-07-2010, 03:56 PM There was a thread a while back on CM about NYinstaller dropping a 6.1 in the place of a 2.7, so you can go from 2.7 to 6.1, it can be done but not cheap.
09 Plym 07-08-2010, 02:26 AM Call Stu at Inertia Motorsports to get the details. I was at his shop last year when he did something like this and had to swap the ECM to make it work. Most of the connections are the same so physically it is easy.
