This is what one of the local dealers is offering: 3.6 SE 292HP 25,170. I suppose that's good new. I paid 14,000 for my 07 in 08 used. They only present the sedan. http://www.chryslerdodgejeeplawton.com/showroom/2011/Dodge/Charger/Sedan.htm

hmmm... R/T 5spd 368hp 5.7 8cyl 30,170... quicker than the Police model and only a measly 1000$ more? I'm confused. I imagine the police would have something sleeping under the hood that dealers aren't allowed to make public? Anyway, I have to see this in person. But can't help getting all excited. :)

The police cars typically have heavier suspension, alternator, and cooling systems. Plus, the shifter is relocated to the dash and a police equipment console is installed between the seats. They also come pre-wired for lights, etc. All that adds cost.

Why are they cheaper? Is all of this done after the state or city make a purchase?

I don't know about the Charger cop cars, but the Crown Vic Interceptors had no chrome trim, steel wheels, vinyl floor cover, no cruise control, AM/FM radio, no power seats, etc. Some of those could be added on as options, but the base cop car was pretty basic. So if Dodge wants to sell some Charger police cars, they have to get down in the trenches on the price. I'd guess that the average civilian Charger makes $3000 to $5000 profit for Chrysler, so they can give up that profit on the police Chargers if then have to in order to be competitive in the bidding wars.
