Yeap, heatshrink, wrap it with electrical tape or use liquid tape. Don't think moisture would be a real bad problem but you never know.

The trick about soldering is to heat the wire from the bottom and let the solder bleed through from the top.

I'll make a how to about using a linesman splice to connect wires and solder them this week. I'm pretty handy at it.
